Another story tells us that the name is derived from a shorebird called the Killdeer. The name eventually morphed to Kill Devil Hills. However the town got its name, it certainly is unique.

Wright Brothers National Memorial

This is a good stop for history lovers like me as you learn a lot about the Wright brothers and what they did in the early 1900s This monument has boulder markers marking the location and distances of their first attempts at flying. It’s $10 for every adult, 15 years and under are free.
Jockey’s Ridge State Park
The sand dunes at Jockey’s Ridge are massive! The state park is home to the largest sand dune on the east coast. It fluctuates throughout the year between 80 and 100 feet tall, depending on the weather and the hurricane season. This is a popular place to fly kites and to hang glide as well.
