Murata (Demon Slayer) (2024)

Murata (村田) is a recurring character of the 2016-2020 fantasy horror manga series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and its 2019 anime adaptation.

He is a Demon hunter who has mundane combat abilities with nothing unique or extraordinary while Giyu Tomioka, who is revealed to be Murata's fellow student, possessed immense fighting talents to be promoted into becoming a Pillar - the rank in the corps equivalent to warlords. In addition Tanjiro and his friends, who entered the world of Demon hunting much later and therefore are deemed juniors to Murata, also possessed innate fighting skills to slay Demons in their own unique ways. In his 8 years of service in the corps, he is still an average field agent.

In spite of his mediocrity, Murata is a seasoned and hardened veteran Demon hunter who manages to survive 8 years in his service to Demon Slayer Corps while other field agents perish in large numbers against vicious Demons, and is one of very few corps soldiers who survives to witness the outcome of the human-Demon War that raged on for a millennium.

He is voiced byKōki Miyata in Japanese andKhoi Dao in English.

Appearance[]

Murata is a young boy who has straight jet-black hair parted down on the middle and similarly colored eyes. He lubricates his hair with oils because a girl he had a crush with liked his hair that way prior to him joining the corps.

Personality[]

Murata is sociable, easy to befriend with and has strong camaraderie. In spite of huge difference in powers, Murata feels no enmity towards Tanjiro's team and treats Tanjiro, Giyu and other junior agents as any role model seniors would and should, offering them the best advice he could (such as advising Zenitsu, who had a tough time conditioning his body in very cold water, to hold onto rocks to warm himself during a trial given by the Rock Pillar).

Abilities[]

Overall Abilities: Although not on par with the likes of Tanjiro or Inosuke, Murata's prowess is superior to that of his squad, as evidenced by being its only survivor (albeit with the aid of multiple characters). His assistance in dealing with his manipulated comrades was vital in buying time for Tanjiro and Inosuke to defeat the Mother Spider Demon. Since the puppets had their powers augmented because of the demon's Blood Demon Art, his ability to hold them back was a testament of his above average performance. He was also able to reach the last stage in the Hashira training curriculum, which hardly any members could do.

Water Breathing (の Mizu no kokyū^?): Murata is a user of the Water Breathing, however, for Murata, the water is too faint to be able to be seen.

Techniques[]

• First Form: Water Surface Slash (ノ　り Ichi no kata: Minamo Giri^?) - The user generates enough momentum to create a powerful single concentrated slash.
• Second Form: Water Wheel (ノ　 Ni no kata: Mizu Guruma^?) - The user leaps and vertically spins forward in the air while releasing a flowing attack in a circular motion.

Trivia[]

• His reason for joining the Demon Slayer Corps was not revealed until much later in the manga.
• Because Giyu and Murata survived together in their Final Selection Trial, Murata is also a classmate to Sabito, a Demon hunter candidate with enormous fighting potential who sadly perished in his fight against a Demon due to a faulty nichirin sword. Because of Sabito's uncommonly heroic acts of exterminating almost every Demons at the testing site (causing Sabito's nichirin sword to become worn-out in the process) and his eventual sacrifice Giyu, Murata and the rest of candidates were able to safely pass the trial.
